We didn't start Pacific Northwest Family Law to offer work-life balance. We started the firm to use the law to help families in crisis. But we've discovered that if you are a good attorney, you can provide meaningful work fixing families and still be home in time for dinner, take long vacations, and turn your email off for the weekend.

Long before starting the firm, its founder, Scott Ashby, worked at a large firm in Phoenix. There he saw first-hand how office politics and weak leadership trump ability and excellence. Once he was asked by a firm partner in a different division to edit a brief this partner's favorite associate had written for a major client. But when he saw the draft, he had to ask his managing partner to approve a rewrite. He got the approval, improved the brief and won the argument. And then he was targeted by the partner for showing up the star. It was soon after he made partner himself that he decided to leave big law to do something different

We've been successful in growing the firm to six offices across Washington State and villainized because unsuccessful attorneys think that the successful have done something wrong or underhanded. If you believe that people who have money or expect to be paid high compensation for what they do is wrong you will also be unhappy.

Unhappy people have accused us of expecting too much because we expect excellence and intelligence in your work. We have been accused of being focused on money because we expect attorneys to work for clients based on the client's agreement to pay for the attorney's time. And we've been accused of failing to train because we didn't hold attorney's hands as they went to court the first time.

We do not seek the approval of people who can't tolerate success and difference. Our firm is not a place to be coddled or protected from work and effort. We use the law to strengthen families, support our community, and improve the lives of those around us. We care about doing things right.

We have about fourteen attorneys in the firm currently across Washington State. We meet in different groups to work on cases daily. We also meet weekly for attorney training. And we have an active, internal chat group where the new and experienced alike ask for receive help. This support network works. But it only works for those who bother to ask and bother to seek out greater insight instead of believing that they have no support and no guidance at all.

The firm is a home to smart people-certainly people we think are the best in family law in the state. Still, it's a small firm and not everyone does well in that environment. You'll have a full support team-legal assistants, admin staff, systems that work. But it takes a specific mindset to thrive here. You have to be willing to learn the systems , delegate, and work with your team. We've hired attorneys in the past who either tried to do everything themselves or did nothing at all. Neither works.

Clients need attorneys who are steady, clear, strategic-and willing to be honest, even when it's hard. That includes stating the cost of services and enforcing boundaries. Some clients lash out when they feel afraid or overwhelmed. That's part of the work. And the work is worth doing well.

If you don't check every box, that's fine-reach out anyway. We're open to conversations with the right person, even if the fit isn't obvious on paper.

Now, a word or two about the location. The Tri-Cities are not Seattle. That can be good and bad. It is more conservative, there are fewer people, there are fewer trees. There are many religious people here. There is not much in the way of "night life." But the Tri-Cities is the fastest growing area of Washington for a reason. It boasts the best schools, safest neighborhoods (that it is affordable to live), and the highest education per capita. Business are continuing to invest and people continue to move here. Traffic here happens regularly for about fifteen minutes at precisely 5pm daily. Otherwise, you may have to wait through a light if there is an accident on the freeway.

We believe that family law can be a rewarding, long-term path for the right kind of attorney. We've seen it happen. We're looking for the next one to join us.

If you're ready for your next step, we'd like to hear from you.
