Summary
As a Special Education Teacher, you will be instrumental in fostering an inclusive learning environment for students with diverse needs, including those with developmental disabilities and autism. Reporting to the school principal, your role involves developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's unique requirements. Your core skills in special education and experience working with students will be complemented by premium skills in classroom management and curriculum development. With a focus on early intervention and effective communication, including American Sign Language, you will help students achieve their academic and personal goals while promoting their overall well-being.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
Hours 8:25am to 3:05pm Monday - Friday
(1) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in Special Education; AND
(2) Eligibility for NYS certification in Special Education; AND
(3) NYS certification in at least one other area or subject; AND
(4) Deaf Education Certification and experience, preferred but not mandatory
(5) Experience working with students with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and behavioral concerns preferred.
(6) The willingness to work toward competency in American Sign Language including completion of a Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) at the proficiency level defined for each job position as determined by SMSD.
The School provides classes and supports when necessary in Learning ASL.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach a self-contained Special Education class of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students who have additional disabilities.
Plans and prepares lessons and other instructional materials following curriculum guidelines;
Instructs students in various subjects using American Sign Language, and English and Picture Exchange Communication.
Confers with parents, testing specialists, and other administrators to develop individual educational plans for students;
Prepares, administers, and scores academic tests and records results;
Meets and confers with parents and with supervisor to discuss students' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements;
Assists in selecting appropriate textbooks and learning materials;
Participates in curriculum development;
Maintains updated lesson plans as prescribed by the curriculum;
Intercedes in emergency situations as required;
Attends departmental and faculty meetings;
Maintains order in the classroom;
Performs other duties as assigned.
