Position Title: Heartland School Special Education Teacher

Reports To: Mary Quiroz School Principal

Location: 5731 South 108th Street Omaha

Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Overview

The Heartland School Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing individualized instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs in a non-traditional educational setting. This role requires a dedicated educator who can adapt teaching strategies to meet the unique academic, social, and emotional needs of students, many of whom may face behavioral, developmental, or socio-emotional challenges. The teacher will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to create a supportive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that fosters student growth and success.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Duties
Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in alignment with state and federal special education laws.
Adapt curriculum and instructional methods to meet the diverse learning styles and needs of students in an alternative school setting.
Deliver engaging lessons that focus on academic, social-emotional, and life skills development.
Use evidence-based instructional strategies to address the needs of students with disabilities, including those with autism, emotional/behavioral disorders, ADHD, and learning disabilities.

Classroom Management
Create and maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive classroom environment that supports learning and minimizes disruptions.
Develop and implement behavior management plans tailored to individual student needs.
Utilize de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed practices to support students during crises or challenging situations.

Collaboration and Communication
Collaborate with general education teachers, support staff, administrators, and families to ensure a cohesive approach to student education.
Attend and actively participate in IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and professional development sessions.
Maintain clear, consistent, and respectful communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress and needs.

Data Collection and Reporting
Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals through ongoing assessments and observations.
Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, behavior, and other relevant data.
Prepare reports and documentation required for compliance with special education regulations.

Professional Development
Stay current with best practices in special education, alternative education, and inclusive teaching strategies.
Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities and training sessions.

Qualifications

Education and Certification
Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
Valid teaching license with Special Education endorsement with the Nebraska Department of Education
Certification in crisis intervention or de-escalation techniques (e.g., CPI, PBIS) is a plus.

Experience
Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching in a special education or alternative school setting is preferred.
Experience working with students with emotional/behavioral challenges and other disabilities.

Skills and Competencies
Strong knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
Ability to differentiate instruction and implement accommodations and modifications effectively.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
Patience, empathy, and a passion for working with diverse learners.
Proficiency in using educational technology and adaptive tools.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
The role may involve working with students who exhibit challenging behaviors.
May require physical interventions or restraint in accordance with school policies (training provided).
Requires standing, walking, and occasionally lifting materials or equipment.
